Right To Withdraw from The Curriculum

Parental Right to Withdraw Children from Certain Subjects

At Moor Nook Primary School, we are proud to offer a broad, balanced and inclusive curriculum that celebrates diversity, encourages curiosity and helps our children develop respect and understanding for others.

We recognise that families hold different beliefs, values and convictions. We respect these differences and are committed to working positively with parents and carers.

Religious Education (RE)

Parents and carers have a legal right to withdraw their child from all or part of Religious Education (RE).

At Moor Nook, RE provides children with opportunities to learn about different religions, beliefs and worldviews. Our aim is to develop knowledge, tolerance, understanding and mutual respect, rather than to promote any particular religious belief.

Parents wishing to exercise their right of withdrawal should contact the Headteacher. We would welcome a conversation beforehand to explain our curriculum and address any questions, although parents are not required to provide a reason for withdrawing their child.

Collective Worship

Parents and carers also have the legal right to withdraw their child from all or part of collective worship.

Relationships, Sex and Health Education (RSHE)

Parents and carers may request that their child be withdrawn from sex education taught outside the statutory National Curriculum for science.

There is no right to withdraw children from statutory Relationships Education, Health Education or relevant aspects of the science curriculum.

Other Curriculum Subjects

There is no general parental right to withdraw children from National Curriculum subjects, including English, mathematics, science, history, geography, physical education or swimming.

However, we recognise that individual circumstances may sometimes require sensitive discussion. We encourage parents to contact us if they have concerns about particular lessons or activities.

Working Together

Where withdrawal is requested, we will make appropriate arrangements for the child's supervision and purposeful education during the relevant lessons.

We believe that open dialogue and mutual respect provide the strongest foundations for a successful partnership between home and school.

If you wish to discuss any aspect of the curriculum or request withdrawal from an eligible subject, please contact:
